Tim Grover, author of Relentless, and personal trainer to the greatest athletes in the world spoke at this years D2D Sales Conference. Grover’s main point while on stage was to be yourself. He asked the audience a question, “Do you know what YOU truly want to be? What do YOU want to be?”  Few people raised their hands. If you know Tim Grover, then you know how INTENSE he is. He is the most intense speaker I’ve ever heard. So, I don’t know if most of the audience just truly didn’t know what they wanted to be OR if they were just scared of him. HAHA

After he asked the question, he picked someone who had their hand raised. He said again, “What do YOU want to be?” The guy replied, “A country music singer.”

Now let me explain…

The room is full of 1500 people. This event is for door to door salesman in alarms, pest control, roofing, or satellite and business owners in one of those categories. Fifteen Hundred people in the audience. Fifteen Hundred people. Ok?

Tim Grover then said “Ok, if you want to be a country singer, then get on this stage and sing us a song.”

Ok. Wow. That is not what this guy was expecting. My heart stopped for him.

He jumped on the stage though. He stood there for a minute. SUPER NERVOUS. We could tell. How could he not be? He’s a door to door salesman or business owner NOT a country music singer or even a performer.

None-the-less, he started singing. It wasn’t the best, but did we expect it to be? For a minute, imagine yourself in his shoes. No offense, but you wouldn’t sound good either. I mean, we’re not Blake Shelton or Martina McBride- Are we?

After two lines of the song, the audience (the entire audience) started singing with him. Who knew 1500 people in Salt Lake City, Utah knew a country music song? Somehow they did.

He’s four lines in now and he forgets what lines comes next. That is ok though because the audience is still singing and he’s able to jump right back in.

He finished his song and the audience erupted; yelling, screaming, jumping, clapping, etc. There was a standing ovation from all 1500 people in this room.

Garrett, an employee of mine, said he got chills. I was literally crying because it was such a magical moment for him and well…for me, too. I had tears running down both sides of my face. How incredible?

That guy will go on to sing country music somehow and someway! There is no doubt about that. He has so much more confidence in himself to pursue that goal. Heck, I have more confidence in myself to be who I want to be.

This lesson drove Grover’s point HOME, a slam dunk!! We, as a society, have to be better about not letting other people control what we do or how we react in situations. I learned a HUGE lesson from him.

Remember not to let your family, friends, co-workers, etc dictate who you are or can be. YOU can be whatever you want. It requires effort, relentless drive, and strong motivation to succeed, BUT it can be done. If you haven’t read the book, Relentless by Tim Grover, I recommend it. I wrote a review on it, here. Go read that first, then buy the book.

Comment below if you know what you truly want to be in life, and go another step forward, chase that dream!!
